After a hairy couple of days on not knowing where I was to get this much sought-after game (I neglected my regular routine of pre-buying the games I really want in advance) I managed to get Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock today for my Wii! And, like the title says, the gods of Rock shine down upon you who are also blessed to have found this game today. For this game, my friends, is holy and good. Yes, it has earned its place in the house of Rock.
I only just got home now, and so I haven’t had a chance to play my way through all the little nooks and crannies of this game — so far, I’ve only played through Career Mode on Medium, which basically means I ran through a basic songlist. But I gotta say, the new game developers (it’s not Harmonix this time) did a great job of picking the songs this time! Those who have played the previous games probably felt like this while playing them: “Man this game sure is fun! But gosh, I wish [insert song title] was in here.” Well, in this game, a lot of those blanks get filled (Ok, not all of them — gotta make room for the next game, eh, boys) but hey, any rock game that’s got the real Weezer, Pearl Jam, AND Guns and Roses is pretty darn good!
The thing that makes me really excited about this game is actually battling the bosses: Slash from the Guns and Roses, complete with Top Hat, some guy from Rage of the Machine (rock nerds, feel free to chime in with this name again… Tom…somethingsomething) show up and actually try to show you up at your own damn concerts! That I find is really cool because for the first time in the series, I feel like my Guitar Hero aptitude is actually being put to the test — by some really great rock giants! Like when you’re playing that Tom whatchafawhoosit guy, he comes at you with this crazy waowaowaoing guitar sounds — like the way only he can make his guitar sing, and then you gotta come back at him with a lick that he wrote for you (neatly translated into Guitar Hero-speak, so RED BLUUUUUE YELLOW YELLOW GREEN — or, in other words, in the very simplified guitar guide system traditional to Guitar Hero games)! So it actually sounds like you’re battling him! And it’s not like you’re playing a song either; no, in the beginning, it sounds very jam-like, ’cause you’re going into the battle sans-accompaniment. That’s right, when you’re trying to RAGE against the MACHINE, it’s just you and your axe versus Tom’s and his face-melters.
Things I haven’t tried yet include the online aspect of this game. I guess I might talk about it if it’s more special than the battling of the bosses. But for now I think I’ll watch Clark thrash a bit more. I’ll talk to you next time! And to those who are still wondering if this game makes me raise a goblet of rock in the air, to you I say:
Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!
Rock on, brothers and sisters. Rock on.
